Jordan High School's Daniela Sanchez is a resilient and perseverant young lady who CISLA has supported during her high school journey.
Daniela has been a part of CISLA since February 2021, after arriving from El Salvador. She was recommended to join CISLA to have a mentor to help her integrate into Los Angeles.
When her site director, Ms. Acuña, first met Daniela, she described her as shy and introverted. Not only was she in a new country, but Daniela was also processing the passing of a family member. She did not understand how to cope with her feelings or navigate her new high school environment. Hoping to help Daniela acclimate to her new environment, Ms. Acuña connected her to Jordan High School's Psychiatric Social worker and an on-campus grief group.
Over time, the combination of our one-on-one case management, connection to resources, and consistent care and encouragement contributed to Daniela blossoming into a powerful and self-assured young woman. In less than four years, she adjusted to a new life and community and became fluent in English.

Daniela's newfound self outlook led her to get involved on campus. She became president of Estudiantes Sin Limites, CISLA's Newcomers Club, and Wellness Chasers, a club on campus that promotes health and wellness and healthy relationships.
Like most seniors, Daniela devoted her time to applying for colleges earlier in the school year, uncertain where she'd attend. Her dedication and focus resulted in an outpouring of acceptance letters, and she found it challenging to decide. With encouragement from teachers and friends, we are proud to share that Daniela is pursuing her bachelor's degree in political science at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), one of the nation's top universities. |
Daniela dreams of one day being an Immigration Attorney and helping her community in the same way CISLA has helped her.
In addition to her college acceptance, she was awarded CISLA's JP Scholarship, which will provide a $5,000 yearly investment over her four-year college journey.
Daniela is an example and role model for all her peers, and anything you set your mind to is possible. Her future is filled with endless opportunities, and we are confident she will accomplish all her goals.
