CISLA breaks down barriers that prevent students from accessing the resources and opportunities that help unlock their fullest potential.

CISLA has proudly watched James Limon flourish during his four years with the program. His deep and consistent involvement with CISLA illustrates the Power of going all IN as a student. James has taken full advantage of CISLA's model and resources, and the outcomes are evident!

During the pandemic, James's social personality hindered his ability to transition to online learning, and he found learning from home challenging. He struggled with being away from friends and experiencing the school environment. Working with his site team, James received extra one-on-one support virtually to help him adjust.

Upon returning to school this year, James decided to go all IN for his senior year. He joined the Student Run LA Club to train for and run the LA Marathon. CISLA's re-engagement coordinator Ricky was his trainer and helped him prepare for and ran alongside him in the marathon! Ricky says that, “James was a committed team player. Always motivating his teammates to finish strong, telling jokes, and never giving up no matter how many miles were left.”

James is exploring and excelling in his on-campus activities beyond his major life accomplishment of completing the 26.2-mile marathon. He is the senior editor for Mendez High School's yearbook class and part of the campus's student policing committee. During his first and second years, he was also an active member of CISLA's XY zone, CISLA's leadership development, and peer support program that create opportunities for students to develop positive personal journeys, empowerment, leadership, and college and career success. CISLA has also supported James beyond the classroom, providing him with school supplies, food, and financial assistance during the pandemic.

After graduation James will continue his education at California State University, Los Angeles. He has declared pre-engineering but will take some film classes to grow his passion in photography. James is excited to make new friends next fall and feels confident that he is prepared to navigate college. As a first-generation college student, he is motivated to make his family proud. CISLA is thrilled for him to start his college journey and looks forward to continuing to support him.
