At CISLA, we empower students to break through barriers.
At Communities In Schools of Los Angeles (CISLA), we unlock the potential in every student by surrounding them with a community of support. Through transformative one-on-one relationships and school-wide initiatives, we help students confront and overcome barriers that stand between them and a brighter future. With caring adults by their side, students gain the tools, confidence, and opportunities they need to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally—empowering them to take charge of their own story and define their success for life.
The recent fires in Los Angeles have deeply impacted many of our students and their families—especially those working as domestic workers, gardeners, day laborers, caregivers, and service industry workers. As they face job loss, housing instability, and financial hardship, their children’s education and well-being are at risk.
The CISLA Families Disaster Relief Fund provides direct support to help families cover essential expenses like housing, utilities, and basic needs. Your donation can bring immediate relief and help restore stability so our students can continue to learn and thrive.
What We Do
Communities in Schools of Los Angeles (CISLA) is an affiliate of Communities In Schools (CIS), the largest dropout (pushout) prevention nonprofit in the United States. As part of this impactful network, CISLA works directly in schools to ensure every student has the resources, relationships, and opportunities they need to thrive.
Here's how we make an impact:
1
Integrated Student Support
CISLA places site coordinators in schools throughout the Los Angeles Unified School District to identify needs, create tailored plans, and provide personalized assistance. Coordinators regularly meet with students, families, and teachers to monitor progress, set goals, and adjust plans as needed—ensuring every student has the support to succeed.
2
Community Partnerships
Collaborating with community partners and local businesses, CISLA connects students and their families to vital resources, from recruiting volunteers for tutoring programs and building clothing closets to securing access to medical care for families in need—ensuring students have the support they need to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
3
College and Career Readiness
Preparing students for life beyond high school, CISLA offers guidance on college applications, financial aid, and career exploration, ensuring students are equipped to pursue their goals.
Across the nation, 15 million students face chronic absenteeism. Communities In Schools of Los Angeles (CISLA) is raising awareness on this issue with our "Being Present Matters" campaign. At CISLA, we are committed to breaking this cycle by keeping students in the classroom and connecting families to essential resources. Our site coordinators work hand-in-hand with students to provide the support and tools they need to stay engaged and thrive academically.
When CISLA partners with schools, the impact is clear:
