LEADERSHIP TRANSITION FAQ
Why is the Executive Director on leave?
Our Executive Director, Elmer Roldan, is on a temporary, Board-approved leave of absence to pursue candidacy for Los Angeles City Council. This decision follows all nonprofit compliance guidelines and was planned well in advance to ensure continuity for CISLA’s programs and stakeholders.
Who is leading CISLA during this period?
Nick Wu, a longtime CISLA senior leader, is serving as Interim Executive Director. Nick has been part of CISLA for five years and assumed this role after months of preparation with the Board and Executive Committee. He oversees all daily operations and ensures continued support for students and school partners.
Will CISLA’s services or programs be affected?
No. All CISLA programs, school-site services, and partnerships are continuing without interruption. Our mission to support students remains our top priority, and our team structure ensures full coverage during the transition.
Is CISLA involved in political campaigning?
No. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, CISLA is strictly nonpartisan and does not participate in or endorse political campaigns. No CISLA resources—staff time, facilities, communications, or materials—may be used for campaign purposes.
Are CISLA staff allowed to participate in political activities?
Yes, but only on their own time and in a personal capacity. Staff and Board members may not reference their CISLA affiliation in public endorsements, and no one may encourage or pressure colleagues to support any campaign. Campaign activity is prohibited at all CISLA programs, school sites, or events.
Who is leading CISLA during this period?
CISLA maintains strong financial oversight through:
-
Monthly review by the Board Finance Committee
-
Annual independent audits
-
Transparent reporting through public posting of audit reports and IRS Form 990 filings
These safeguards ensure that organizational resources continue to be used responsibly and effectively.
Is CISLA using any funds or staff time to support a political campaign?
No. CISLA enforces strict policies prohibiting the use of funds, staff time, or organizational assets for political purposes. Compliance with nonprofit regulations is a core element of our transition plan.
What happens if Elmer Roldan wins the election?
If Mr. Roldan is elected, the Board will activate a 60–90 day leadership transition process to determine permanent organizational leadership. This process will be communicated publicly once initiated.
What if he is not elected?
If not elected, Mr. Roldan may return to CISLA following established re-entry procedures outlined in our Board-approved transition plan.
Where can I find CISLA’s financial statements?
Our most recent audit reports and IRS Form 990 filings are available on our website in the Financial Transparency section. These documents demonstrate CISLA’s ongoing commitment to strong governance and fiscal responsibility.
